Every year I watch roughly 100 NFL draft prospects to familiarize myself with their skillsets. After the NFL draft concludes I start to truly map out my stances on players and their situations so that I can begin betting on or against them in various ways. Here are a few of my early impressions on a number of rookies and one second year quarterback that might interest NFL All Day enthusiasts.

Quarterbacks

Zach Wilson: The Jets are doing a much better job of building around Wilson than they ever did for Sam Darnold. This year I’m looking for progress out of Wilson and this Jets offense, while having realistic expectations on New York’s ability to have significant team success in a loaded AFC. When the schedule order is released in roughly a week, I will look into buying some more Wilson Debut Moments if the Jets start the season with some manageable opponents.

Kenny Pickett: I’m a little higher than consensus on Pickett as a talent, but his landing spot in Pittsburgh is what primarily intrigues me from a collectibles standpoint as he’ll be supported by one of the most recognizable and stable organizations in football right from day one.

Malik Willis: As a talent, Willis is a dual-threat quarterback with a very interesting ceiling; he just needs to become a more complete and consistent passer to get there. Going into the draft I didn’t even consider the prospect of Willis landing in Tennesse (ideally I wanted to see him end up in Pittsburgh). But his landing spot grows on me a little more each day as the Titans have been among the more consistent and well coached teams in the NFL over the last five years and their quarterback Ryan Tannehill, while he’s blown expectations out of the water in Tennessee, is significantly less talented than at least half a dozen young signal callers that call the AFC home. That itself creates a potential path for Willis to get a shot a year or two from now if the Titans continue to fall short in the playoffs.

Matt Corral: The Panthers have some high-end skill players, they just added an offensive tackle with the sixth overall pick, and all of the decision makers in this organization are going to get fired if Carolina’s product on the field doesn’t improve this season. Those conditions could ultimately lead to Corral seeing meaningful playing time this season if current Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold continues to struggle. Even though I think Corral has a shot of playing reasonably well if given an extended opportunity this season, at this moment I will probably stay away from him in collectibles, primarily because there’s a very good chance the Panthers will have a new regime in place next season that will likely want to bring in their own quarterback.

Desmond Ridder: Atlanta is in a rebuild, which means that Ridder could see a few starts towards the end of the season for the Falcons. I was much lower than consensus on Ridder heading into the draft and I’m not exactly invigorated by his landing spot, which makes him a cross off for me in collectibles.

Skill Position Players

Breece Hall: I like what the Jets are doing from a team building perspective, and the talented Hall has a pretty clear path to significant, early playing time. Those conditions may prevent Hall from having any sort of real dip that I’d target from a collectibles standpoint, but I fully expect him to be a factor in fantasy while playing in a major market for the next handful of years or more.

Isaiah Spiller: Current Chargers running back Austin Ekeler is a dynamic talent that is a genuine difference maker in the passing game, but he’s going to turn 27-years-old in a couple of weeks and last season marks the only time he’s seen more than 132 carries or ran for more than 557 yards in an NFL season. It might take a year or two, but Spiller has a very real shot of becoming a significant part of an elite offense that plays in the Los Angeles market. My hope is that he plays a little early so that I can see what he looks like on an NFL field, and from there I will decide if he’s an interesting speculative option that could see an interest swell if and when his role in the Chargers offense eventually expands.

Christian Watson: Every year there are a handful of guys that just flat out stun me when I start watching them, and Watson was one of those guys this year. I will elaborate on that more in a coming OTM show. His landing spot in Green Bay is both very encouraging and sneaky alarming, as Watson has a chance to emerge as Aaron Rodgers’ new favorite weapon over the next few years. On the other side of the coin, Rodgers’ will turn 39 this December which means that the Packers could end up transitioning to a new quarterback before the end of Watson’s rookie deal.

George Pickens and Calvin Austin III: The Steelers have been producing high-quality, homegrown wide receivers for the entirety of my coherent life and I was already higher than consensus on both of these guys. So, I’ll be keeping my eye on both over the next couple of years.

Skyy Moore: I’m not quite as over the moon about Moore as many seem to be, but I did like him heading into the draft and he couldn’t have landed in a better spot than the post Tyreek Hill Chiefs. My concern here from a collectibles standpoint is none of what I just said is anywhere close to being a secret, which means you’re probably going to have to buy this guy near his ceiling if you want him when the time comes.

Defensive Players

George Karlaftis: This year’s draft class had a handful of high-end pass rushers that I have some level of interest in from a collectibles standpoint, and I found our Jay Swah’s take on Lions new pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson particularly interesting. But I loved Karlaftis’s landing spot with the Chiefs and he was “my guy” on defense in this year’s draft class.
